The images displayed here show a selection of pieces produced from 2018 to the present. The work utilises and experiments with various forms and materials. I work primarily with ash, including the burnt remains of old work, clay, wax, lead and found objects. The ideas that inform the work filter down through many interests including European folk tales, dream images, Archaeology and the physical and psychological processes of Alchemy. The surface and substance of the work are often very fragile, or subject to change through the effects of movement, friction and heat. Many of the drawings are wafer thin after being scratched or rubbed with abrasives. The surface of the paintings are often burnt and caustic substances, applied which initiate colour and tonal change. Many of the objects are fragile by the very nature of the materials used, especially those constructed from thin layers of raw clay or fragments held together by clay dust and ash. As an alternative to fire and heat I have recently been investigating the effects of burying materials and objects underground for long periods of time. The ground is therefore used as a natural incubator to initiate transformation.
